For Ferndale Market, a third-generation turkey farm and local foods store in Cannon Falls, it’s been both an honor and a challenge to be an “essential business” during the pandemic. As food producers and retailers, they have found themselves at the intersection of supply and demand concerns, as well as the very real worries surrounding COVID-19’s impact on the broader community.

On the retail side, Ferndale’s on-farm market remains open and well stocked. They are coordinating with their local food partners and believe their short supply chain is a tremendous asset during these days of disruption. Customers are welcome to shop in store during regular hours or take advantage of Ferndale’s new online ordering system for curbside pickup. Having a curbside pickup option had been a long-term goal for quite some time, but became a reality in less than two weeks in order to better serve customers during this time.

Ferndale has continued to fill turkey orders for retail partners, all while feeling a very real sense of loss for their food service customers during the shutdown. They had orders for restaurants, schools, and colleges – including St. Olaf and Carleton – that will now wait for more normal times.
